| Historic Bath invites the traveler to spend a few relaxing days strolling through the pleasant parks overlooking the Kennebec River or rummaging through the many antique stores on Front Street. Beach lovers will find two sandy state park beaches within a short drive. The nationally acclaimed Maritime Museum, The Chocolate Church or the Art Gallery of Bowdoin College furnish exciting diversions on a rainy afternoon while short drives to Portland, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor or Freeport (home of L.L. Bean) can satisfy every shopper's appetite. And speaking of appetites, the restaurants in the area serve marvelous seafood on tables overlooking the great bays and charming coves.

Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River in Maine is a small jewel of a city. An old seafaring town, Bath has sailed gracefully into the present day bringing a taste of her history with her. About a dozen antique stores plus a like number of boutiques can be found off the brick sidewalks with gas lamp posts.
Cruises up and down the Kennebec River can be reserved from the City's docks. Guided fishing expeditions can be arranged along with kayak and sailboat rentals. Several excellent golf courses and municipal tennis courts are nearby. Within a few blocks is the YMCA with complete facilities for swimming, weight training and aerobics (and the Galen Moses House offers complimentary day memberships to our guests).

There are a number of beautiful beaches within a twenty minute drive of Bath. Two of the most splendid beaches are:
Popham Beach State Park: This beach has six miles of sand facing the ocean. There are changing facilities and showers. If you drive past the state parking lot to the end of Route 209 you come to Fort Popham, a never finished Civil War fort. The sunset views from either spot is a terrific experience. The beach is about twenty minutes from Bath.
Reid State Park: This beach has three miles of sandy shore and three miles of rocky shore. There are changing facilities and showers and also a snack bar.

1. National Trust for Historic Preservation
Bath named to the 2005 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations
Richard Moe, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
calls Bath ".a jewel hidden in plain site. A small, historic and
relatively unspoiled New England town, Bath had the good sense to hang
on to what makes it so special. The result is a vibrant community that
offers travelers an ideal retreat. Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River, Bath is an old seafaring town, deemed one of the best small
cities in America. A New England oil painting come to life, this
compact, walkable community is known for its treasure trove of maritime
history, historic buildings and rugged, scenic beaches." There are at least two major tours of selected homes offered each year and a well written self-guided tour brochure available.
3. There is an abundance of self-guided driving and walking tours with free or inexpensive guidebooks available. See your innkeepers for guides for the following areas:
- Brunswick
- Topsham
- Georgetown
- Harpswell
- Phippsburg
4. Incidentally, Bath is a gateway city to the midcoast, within a short 40 minute drive of exciting tourist attractions such as Portland and Booth Bay Harbor. Portland is the closest airport and visitors enjoy the Art Museum, Victorian Mansion and shops along the waterfront. In Booth Bay, visitors enjoy whale watching and trips to the islands.

| Local Dining |
| Bath is blessed with several fine restaurants within a short walk of our home. All of our restaurants are casual and do not require a jacket or tie.
We have listed below those restaurants of which we are personally familiar and some of those for which guests have made comments. On weekends in season we recommend reservations. We will be happy to call the restaurant for you.
Mae's Cafe (At the corner of Center and High Streets): A very creative menu with service in attractive surroundings. Originally a bakery, their baked goods and desserts are a must following any meal.
MaryEllenz Cafe (Off Route 1 close to the Sagadahoc Bridge on Vine Street). Featuring Italian cooking, the dinners are reasonably priced and a full bar is available. The soups and salads are wonderful. Open for lunch and dinner .
Kennebec Tavern (Overlooking the Kennebec River off Commercial Street and at the base of Summer Street). They have a marvelous water view and serves on its outdoor deck in good weather. The Smoked Tomato Soup and the Tara Maisu are terrific. Otherwise, a standard menu with good fish and fowl.
Beale Street Barbecue & Grill (215 Water Street). If you like good barbecue (Memphis style) and ample portions, this is it. A variety of fish, fowl and meats are prepared on their giant smoker just outside their kitchen door.
J.R. Maxwell & Co. (122 Front Street). Baths oldest restaurant is somewhat a shrine for the locals. Weekday specials include 2 for 1 Wednesdays and Lobster Night Thursdays. Otherwise a standard menu with reasonable prices.
Solo Bistro (Front Street next to Maxwell's). Bath's newest restaurant has a very upscale menu. The decor is definitely Scandinavian and the wine list is extensive. |
| Restaurants within a short driving distance: |
| KING EIDERS PUB (2 Elm Street, Damariscotta). They win the "best crabcakes in Maine" contest every year. A well rounded menu, reasonable prices, fun atmosphere with a pub featuring live music.
ROBINHOOD FREE MEETINGHOUSE (Georgetown Island). The areas only four star restaurant, this is a gourmets heaven. The menu selection is huge, all courses are prepared "from scratch" and the quantities are large. A bit more pricey than other restaurants in the area but really a special treat. The restored Meetinghouse is fun to explore. The wine list is impressive. About twenty minutes away.
THE OSPREY (Georgetown Island, Robinhood Road). Strictly a summer restaurant with a marvelous waterview and an active osprey nest in the cove. Menu is standard fare but, with a view like that, who has time to eat? About twenty minutes away.
FIVE ISLANDS LOBSTER CO. AND GRILL (Georgetown Island, End of Route 127). Strictly a summer experience with amazing views of the ocean. You order your lobster in the lobster shack and it is brought to you as you sit at picnic tables on the dock next to the lobster boat and watch the lobstermen bring in their catch. Definitely a "Down East Experience." About twenty minutes away. Open during the summer.
COOKS LOBSTER HOUSE (Bailey Island). This is a restaurant with an ocean view that is so special at sunset. The menu features a variety of fish at reasonable prices. About twenty-five minutes away.
LAWNMEER INN & RESTAURANT (Route 27 Southport). Another marvelous selection of food with a great water view. Selections are creatively presented and quite tasty. About twenty-five minutes away. |
